Types of Head Injuries

I’m personal injury attorney Mike Lombardi. Today, I’d like to talk about different types of head injuries. Many motorcyclists are not aware of the different types of traumatic brain injuries a biker can receive in a motorcycle injury. However, it’s important to know them.

Why you must know about the different types of TBIs

Unpleasant as it may be to think about, it is important to become educated about the different types of traumatic brain injuries so that you can make a wise choice about what to do if you or someone close to you is involved in a motorcycle accident injury with a head injury. There are several types of traumatic brain injuries a person can receive in a motorcycle accident.

Types of traumatic brain injuries

A concussion occurs when the brain moves rapidly back and forth, causing it to bounce around in the skull.

A cerebral contusion occurs when the brain is bruised.

A contrecoup injury occurs when the impact happens on one side of the brain, yet the opposite side of the head is the area that receives the damage. This happens when one side of the head is hit with tremendous force, causing the brain to move to the other side of the skull.

Hemorrhages are bleeds in the brain.

An epidural hematoma is a bleed inside the brain when the middle of the meningeal artery is torn. If someone falls on a motorcycle and strikes the side of his head, this type of brain bleed can occur. If it is not spotted quickly, it could become fatal. Sometimes, this injury is missed because the symptoms do not show up immediately.

An acute subdural hematoma is a rupture of multiple blood vessels inside of the brain. It occurs after severe trauma, for example when someone is thrown from a motorcycle and strikes another object. The prognosis of an acute subdural hematoma is poor. It is one of the most serious traumatic brain injuries.

The silent epidemic

Sometimes, traumatic brain injuries are referred to as the silent epidemic because TBI cases can be so challenging to prove. Many traumatically brain injured accident victims appear normal and don’t show any obvious signs of a brain injury.
