What is PIP And How Does It Help?

If you’ve been injured in a motor vehicle or motorcycle accident, you may be eligible for free insurance benefits. People who have been injured in a car or motorcycle accident may have a provision in their policy that will cover them for a certain amount to pay medical bills and other expenses. It’s called PIP or Personal Injury Protection.

PIP means personal injury protection

I’m personal injury attorney, Mike Lombardi. PIP coverage and regulations vary from state to state. It is a no-fault provision of an insurance policy, meaning that no matter who is at fault, the policy will still pay up to a certain amount for certain expenses incurred during an accident.

PIP in Rhode Island

In Rhode Island, PIP coverage is not mandatory, but if the car owner elects to include it in his policy, PIP will pay for various expenses, including medical costs, lost wages, and transportation to and from a medical provider.

Motorcyclists in Rhode Island

PIP is not provided for motorcyclists in Rhode Island. However, a similar coverage called Medical Payment Coverage or simply MedPay is available. This no-fault optional coverage pays for such things as medical and prescription costs, co-pays and deductibles from health insurance coverage, nursing home care and funeral expenses.

PIP in Massachusetts

In Massachusetts, PIP protection of $8,000 is mandatory for all motor vehicle owners and will cover medical bills and replacement services for property, as well as 75% of any lost wages. PIP will pay these expenses for you or anyone you let drive your car. This includes all those living in your household, passengers and pedestrians, no matter who caused the accident.

PIP for motorcyclists

Motorcycle owners in Massachusetts must also purchase PIP insurance. But in an accident, it will only cover pedestrians who may be struck by the motorcycle. It will not cover the motorcycle driver or passenger.
